Existing Laws

विद्यमान कानुन
💡Highlight any phrase below and we'll explain what it means.
Original Text

All laws in force at the time of commencement of the Constitution shall remain in force until repealed or amended. Laws inconsistent with the Constitution shall be void to the extent of inconsistency.

💡 Plain Language Explanation

When the 2015 Constitution took effect, Nepal didn\'t start with a blank legal slate. ALL existing laws continued — the Muluki Ain, Land Revenue Act, Company Act, everything. But any law that contradicts the Constitution is automatically void to the extent of the contradiction. Courts can strike down inconsistent provisions. This allowed a gradual legal transition rather than chaos.

🇳🇵 नेपाली व्याख्या

संविधान लागू हुँदा विद्यमान सबै कानुन कायम रहन्छ — तर संविधानसँग बाझिने कानुन अमान्य।

Good Aspects

Prevents legal vacuum — thousands of laws continue functioning during transition.

⚠️ Concerns

Many pre-2015 laws haven\'t been updated to align with the new Constitution\'s federal structure.
