President

राष्ट्रपति
💡Highlight any phrase below and we'll explain what it means.
Original Text

There shall be a President of Nepal. The President shall be the head of state. The President shall promote national unity and protect the Constitution.

💡 Plain Language Explanation

The President is Nepal's head of state - but largely ceremonial. Real executive power lies with the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The President swears in governments, signs laws, and represents Nepal internationally, but acts on the PM's advice except in specific constitutional situations.

Good Aspects

Separate ceremonial head protects democratic continuity even during political crises.

⚠️ Concerns

Ambiguous constitutional powers have led to controversies (President Poudel's actions in 2023-2025).
