NHRC Functions
The NHRC investigates human rights violations, visits detention centers, reviews laws for human rights compliance, and recommends compensation for victims. It can summon officials and demand documents.
The NHRC can: (1) investigate any human rights violation — torture, disappearance, discrimination, (2) inspect prisons and detention centers WITHOUT prior notice, (3) review whether existing laws comply with human rights standards, (4) recommend the government pay compensation to victims, (5) summon officials and demand documents. These powers make it Nepal\'s primary human rights watchdog.
NHRC ले मानव अधिकार उल्लंघन अनुसन्धान, हिरासत निरीक्षण, कानुन समीक्षा र क्षतिपूर्ति सिफारिस गर्छ।
Investigation and inspection powers give the NHRC real teeth.
\'Recommendations\' are not legally binding — the government can ignore them, and often does.
