Non-residential citizenship may be granted to persons who have acquired foreign citizenship but who, or whose parents/grandparents, were previously citizens of Nepal by descent.

Diaspora Nepalis who took foreign citizenship can get a special "non-resident Nepali" status - allowing economic, social, and cultural rights (but not voting or political rights). This benefits the 5+ million Nepalis abroad.
