💡Highlight any phrase below and we'll explain what it means.
Original Text

The Indigenous Nationalities Commission shall protect the rights, interests, and identity of indigenous nationalities (Adivasi Janajati). It promotes cultural preservation and equitable participation.

💡 Plain Language Explanation

Nepal has 59 officially recognized indigenous nationalities (Adivasi Janajati) — Tamang, Gurung, Rai, Limbu, Newar, Tharu, Magar, and more. This commission protects their cultural identities, traditional knowledge, land rights, and pushes for their proportional representation in government. It also monitors whether indigenous languages and cultures are being preserved.

🇳🇵 नेपाली व्याख्या

आदिवासी जनजाति आयोग — ५९ आदिवासी समूहको सांस्कृतिक पहिचान, भूमि अधिकार र समानुपातिक प्रतिनिधित्व।

Good Aspects

Formal recognition and protection of 59 indigenous groups is unprecedented in Nepal\'s history.

⚠️ Concerns

Many indigenous communities report the commission is ineffective at actually preventing land rights violations and cultural erosion.
