Art. 11 · Part 2

To be Citizen of Nepal

नेपालको नागरिक
Original Text

A person whose father or mother was a citizen of Nepal at his/her birth shall be a citizen of Nepal by descent. A person born in Nepal from a woman who is a Nepali citizen and whose father is not traced shall be provided citizenship by descent.

💡 Plain Language Explanation

If either parent (father OR mother) is Nepali at your birth, you get citizenship by descent. The old constitution only allowed father's line - this 2015 constitution made it gender-equal. A child of a Nepali mother even when father is unknown also gets citizenship.

🇳🇵 नेपाली व्याख्या

आमा वा बाबु मध्ये जो नेपाली छन् तिनीहरूको सन्तानले वंशजद्वारा नागरिकता पाउँछ।

✅ Strengths

Gender-equal citizenship - major milestone for women's rights.

⚠️ Concerns

Implementation had persistent controversies. Naturalized citizenship rules for foreign spouses remain discriminatory.
